Weatherhaven recently delivered two Mobile Expandable Container Configuration units to a Scandinavian military operator, providing a rapidly deployable workshop and mobile 3D printing capability. The MECC is an expandable 20-foot ISO container designed to transit seamlessly through global logistics networks while expanding on site into a spacious operational facility. This delivery demonstrates how containerised deployable infrastructure can support advanced manufacturing and maintenance requirements in remote and austere environments.

A defining advantage of the MECC is its compliance with the global ISO container standard, allowing it to be transported using existing military and commercial logistics chains. The shelter can be moved by truck, rail, ship, or military cargo aircraft while maintaining the same footprint as a conventional 20-foot container. Once deployed, the unit expands to approximately three times its transportable floor area, dramatically increasing usable workspace without increasing the logistical burden.

Upon arrival at the deployment location, the MECC expands in less than fifteen minutes, providing a large protected interior environment suitable for workshop equipment and additive manufacturing systems. The container’s pivoting walls deploy outward, while Weatherhaven’s insulated fabric wing structures create weatherproof side expansions. This design maximises internal workspace while maintaining structural strength, allowing military technicians to conduct repairs, fabrication, and prototyping operations in a controlled environment regardless of external weather conditions.

Each MECC delivered to the operator was configured as a complete mobile workshop system. Integrated power distribution supports specialist tools and 3D printing equipment, while lighting and electrical infrastructure enable immediate operation once deployed. Environmental control is maintained through integrated HVAC systems, ensuring stable interior conditions for personnel and sensitive manufacturing processes. A self-contained generator provides independent power generation and can be positioned away from the container via an umbilical connection if required.

The configuration supplied to the Scandinavian operator was developed through close collaboration between Weatherhaven engineers and the end user. Requirement workshops and technical design reviews ensured that internal layouts, electrical systems, and mechanical infrastructure precisely matched the operator’s intended workshop and additive manufacturing roles. This collaborative design approach allowed the final MECC configuration to integrate operational equipment seamlessly while maintaining the shelter’s deployability, durability, and long-term reliability.

MECC Packed in Scandinavia delivery

Weatherhaven’s MECC platform is one of the most widely deployed expandable container shelters in the world, trusted by militaries for mission-critical infrastructure. Built with rugged materials and tested to military standards, the shelter performs reliably in extreme climates, from hot deserts to sub-arctic conditions. This proven performance makes it particularly well suited for Scandinavian deployments, where harsh winters demand robust infrastructure capable of sustaining operational capability year-round.

Ease of use is fundamental to the MECC concept. The shelter can be deployed by a small team without specialist tools, reducing training requirements and enabling rapid operational readiness. Integrated levelling jacks, wing supports, lighting, and structural systems allow the unit to be stabilised and expanded either on the ground or directly from a trailer. The shelter can also be deployed without exposing personnel or internal equipment to adverse weather during the expansion process.
