Weatherhaven has delivered a fully integrated Mobile Composite Repair Facility (MCRF) to the UK Ministry of Defence, significantly enhancing deployable aviation maintenance capability. Building on the proven AirMax low-pressure inflatable shelter system, this bespoke solution combines structural innovation with advanced environmental control technologies. The facility is purpose-built to support aviation-grade composite repairs in austere environments, ensuring operational flexibility while maintaining strict quality standards required for modern naval aviation support.

At the heart of the MCRF is Weatherhaven’s AirMax inflatable exoskeleton, designed for rapid deployment and operational resilience. The low-pressure structure can be installed in under 20 minutes, providing immediate capability with minimal logistical burden. Its continuous internal fabric walls reduce contamination risk while improving cleanability. Lightweight yet robust, the shelter maintains stability in moderate weather conditions and retains inflation for up to two hours in the event of power loss, ensuring uninterrupted operations when conditions are most challenging.

To support precision composite repair work, the MCRF integrates a suite of advanced environmental systems that work seamlessly within the shelter. The Trotec Zerozon 200 ensures a consistent and safe oxygen balance, while the Aerial ASE 300 regulates humidity levels critical for composite curing processes. These systems create a stable internal climate, enabling technicians to carry out high-quality repairs regardless of external environmental conditions.

Clean air is essential for aviation-grade composite repairs, and the MCRF addresses this through integrated filtration solutions. The Trotec TAC 3500 provides high-performance air purification, removing airborne particulates and contaminants that could compromise repair integrity. Working in conjunction with the shelter’s sealed internal environment and vestibule entry system, this ensures that the facility meets stringent cleanliness requirements typically associated with fixed maintenance infrastructure.

Temperature control within the MCRF is achieved through a combination of heating and cooling systems tailored for extreme conditions. The Dantherm AC 7000 delivers powerful cooling in high-temperature environments, while the Broughton FF3 provides reliable heating in colder climates. Together, these systems maintain the precise thermal conditions required for composite material performance, ensuring repair processes remain consistent and effective regardless of deployment location.

MCRF Valve Inlet and Control

The MCRF’s modular design allows multiple units to be connected, creating extended workspaces up to 12 metres in length. End walls can be opened or removed entirely, enabling flexible configuration depending on operational requirements. Anchor points provide stability, while integrated service ports allow seamless connection of environmental control systems. This adaptability ensures the facility can scale to support varying repair demands, from rapid interventions to more complex structural restoration tasks.

The delivery of the MCRF directly supports the mission of 1710 Naval Air Squadron, specialists in aircraft structural repair and recovery. By enabling high-quality composite repairs at or near the point of need, the facility reduces aircraft downtime and improves fleet readiness. Combining deployable infrastructure with advanced environmental systems, the MCRF represents a significant step forward in supporting frontline aviation operations in demanding and remote environments.
