From University to Industry: Rowan builds real-world engineering experience through Weatherhaven’s Summer design placement programme

Earlier this year, Weatherhaven was proud to announce its sponsorship of Rowan Robertson as he began his engineering studies at Swansea University. Having now successfully completed his first year, Rowan has joined the Weatherhaven team for the summer, putting the knowledge and skills developed through his degree into practice within a real engineering environment.

During his placement, Rowan is supporting design engineering work on one of Weatherhaven’s military shelter trailer systems. The experience is giving him the opportunity to develop his understanding of the full design process — from interpreting requirements and developing engineering concepts through to considering manufacture, integration and the wider business processes that turn an idea into a practical, deployable solution.

Working alongside Weatherhaven’s experienced engineering team also allows Rowan to see how technical decisions are made within a commercial organisation, where performance, manufacturability, cost, timescales and customer requirements all need to be considered as part of the engineering process. This practical exposure complements his university studies and helps build the professional skills, confidence and commercial awareness that are difficult to develop in the classroom alone.

For Weatherhaven, Rowan’s placement is also an opportunity to benefit from the enthusiasm and fresh perspective of an emerging engineer while continuing to invest in the next generation of engineering talent. By giving students meaningful work and responsibility early in their careers, the company hopes to create a genuine two-way relationship — supporting Rowan’s development while allowing him to make a valuable contribution to live engineering projects.

Rowan’s progression from sponsored student to an active member of the engineering team demonstrates the wider purpose behind Weatherhaven’s sponsorship programme: not simply to support education financially, but to connect academic learning with practical experience and provide young engineers with opportunities to understand how engineering works in the real world.
