In an extraordinary logistical effort, Weatherhaven delivered 110 RDMSS military shelters; 55 two-module and 55 four-module shelters, to Ukraine in just ten weeks. The operation included two 747-cargo aircraft lifts and a massive coordinated push from the operations team, freight forwarders and support crews. This rapid schedule ensured the shelters arrived ahead of severe winter conditions. The speed and scale of the deployment reflect exceptional project planning, transport coordination and execution.
The shelter was chosen through its environmentally proven origins when it was recently delivered to the Canadian Armed Forces. The Rapidly Deployed Modular Shelter System (RDMSS) was developed to provide a modern, deployable headquarters and accommodation capability across extreme climates. Its proven record in Arctic-cold conditions makes it a highly suitable solution for Ukraine’s harsh winter environment, offering insulation, modularity and rapid deployability exactly where needed.
Massive team coordination underlined success: logistics, ops and support crew
Delivering 110 shelters in 10 weeks demanded more than just airlift: a huge collective effort from Weatherhaven’s operations, logistics planners, freight companies, local loaders, and ground crews ensured seamless coordination. From packing, transport, customs clearance, to ground distribution, cabling, heating installation, and quality-checks — every role was essential. The result: a fully functional, heated, powered shelter camp ready for winter. This level of teamwork under pressure underscores commitment and capability.
Four-module shelters provide HQ, medical, accommodation spaces with power and heat
Each of the 55 RDMSS 4-Mod shelters delivered includes solid floor tiles, linked dimmable LED lighting, a shelter PDU with 5 kW internal distribution, and two 27 kW diesel-fired heaters with internal air-ducting and thermostat — delivering warmth in freezing weather. The modules can serve as command centres, medical facilities, or accommodation. Their modular structure allows linking into larger complexes, mirroring the layouts used under deployments elsewhere.
Rapid deployment capability: RDMSS modules transport and deploy with ease
The RDMSS is designed for rapid deployment — most shelters can be erected in under 20 minutes by a small team of three to six. That ease of setup was critical during the Ukraine delivery: after airlift, the users could quickly assemble, connect power and heating, and make all the shelters operational in days. This agility helped meet tight winter timelines and respond fast to evolving planning needs.
Two-module shelters maximise flexibility and support dispersed forward posts
The 55 RDMSS 2-Mod units each came with their own 3.4 kVA petrol generator, internal sockets, LED lighting, and a diesel-fired 27 kW heater with ducting and thermostat. Lightweight and compact, these units provide standalone shelter and power for small teams, checkpoints or dispersed units. Their flexible deployment capability was critical for rapidly scaling support across multiple remote sites.
Central 242 kVA power system ensures reliable camp-wide electrical resilience
To support the 4-Mod shelters en masse, the deployment included central camp power generation and reticulation, totalling 242 kVA via multiple gensets, main distribution boards, and more than 110 long-cable external runs. This robust power backbone supplied heating, lighting, communications, and equipment — maintaining full operational capacity for the entire deployment.
