Demining Training Camp Delivered to Ukraine

Weatherhaven has delivered and installed a complete camp infrastructure to support a new demining training facility in Ukraine. This project will help build national capacity to clear unexploded ordnance and landmines, improving safety for civilians and supporting reconstruction. The facility will train personnel in modern clearance techniques while providing them with safe, comfortable accommodation and workspaces, enabling effective instruction and knowledge transfer under challenging local conditions.

The deployed camp forms the backbone of a new training hub where Ukrainian specialists can learn to detect, remove, and safely dispose of mines and other explosive remnants of war. By providing an operational base with accommodation, classrooms, and welfare amenities, the camp enables continuous, intensive training programs. Weatherhaven’s rapidly deployable solution allowed the site to become operational quickly, directly accelerating national preparedness and resilience against explosive hazards.

Series 4 Demining Training External Shelter View Wide

The camp was engineered for year-round operation, incorporating reliable power generation and distribution networks, including backup generators to ensure continuity during outages. HVAC systems were tailored to Ukraine’s temperature extremes, maintaining comfortable conditions throughout the seasons. Lighting, water treatment, and waste management systems were also integrated to create a self-sustaining site. This holistic design approach ensures that trainees and instructors can work and live safely in a fully supported environment.

    Series 4 Demining Training Kitchen

Weatherhaven’s experienced team deployed to Ukraine to oversee site preparation, assembly, and commissioning of the camp. Despite logistical constraints and challenging local conditions, the installation was completed on schedule. Local contractors were engaged where possible to support the build, providing knowledge transfer and ensuring future maintainability. The structured installation process allowed systems to be tested and certified before occupancy, ensuring the camp was safe, secure, and fully functional from day one.

    Series 4 Demining Training Classroom

Central to the camp are Weatherhaven’s Series 4 arch-framed shelters, chosen for their durability, rapid deployment characteristics, and adaptability. These shelters form the primary accommodation and workspace structures, offering insulated, climate-controlled interiors resistant to harsh weather. Their modular design enables flexible interior layouts for dormitories, classrooms, and administration areas. Kitchens and sanitation blocks were delivered as containerised units, providing fully equipped, easily maintainable facilities to support personnel comfort and daily operations.

Series 4 Demining Training External Shelter View

Delivering the camp involved complex logistics, requiring careful coordination between Weatherhaven, international partners, and Ukrainian authorities. Materials and equipment were consolidated, transported, and cleared through customs under tight timelines. Security protocols ensured safe passage through high-risk regions. Detailed planning and sequencing minimised disruption and avoided delays, while transparent communication across all stakeholders kept the project on track. This logistical effort was crucial to rapidly bringing the training capability online.

Series 4 Demining Training External Shelter View HVAC

Health and safety were prioritised throughout design and installation. Fire detection and alarm systems were fitted across all shelters, alongside portable extinguishers and clear signage. Emergency egress routes were planned into every structure, with illuminated exit markings and muster points designated. Electrical and fuel systems were installed to international safety standards. Regular safety briefings and drills are planned to ensure staff readiness, protecting personnel and safeguarding the camp’s long-term operation.

  • Modified Series 4 Delivers Ice Core Extraction in Antarctica

Modified Series 4 Delivers Ice Core Extraction in Antarctica

EPICA required the capability to perform ice core drilling at Little Dome Concordia (Little Dome C), Antarctica—an environment unlike almost any other on earth. At over 3,000 meters above sea level, with average yearly temperatures around -52°C and extreme lows near -80°C, the site presents formidable challenges. Despite these extremes, conditions are surprisingly stable, with very low wind speeds and minimal precipitation. These unusual environmental factors required specialised engineering solutions for shelter design and operation.

The drilling mast required for ice extraction is exceptionally long, meaning it must be pivoted horizontally whenever additional drill sections are attached. To support this, we adapted one of our standard Series 4 shelters by creating a unique roof slot that allowed the mast to extend to its full height. Mounted on a pivot just above ground level, the mast could be operated safely and effectively. This represented an innovative and bespoke structural modification for the project.

Close up of an ice core extraction

Protecting the ancient ice cores was critical, requiring the shelter to remain well below freezing at all times. While summer conditions at Little Dome C can reach -25°C, solar gain presented an additional challenge. To address this, we used specialist fabric with very low insulating properties, ensuring interior temperatures stayed far below freezing. The material also allowed natural light to pass through, helping the research team conserve energy while still maintaining protection for fragile, irreplaceable ice samples.

EPICA S4 Ice Core Shelter Doors Open

The shelter design was based on our 30-foot-wide Series 4 Truss system, offering exceptional structural strength and long-term adaptability. Though wind and snow loads at Little Dome C are comparatively low, this robust system provided confidence and resilience for extended operations. Additionally, the shelter design allowed for future repurposing in other challenging environments or changes in operational use. Large bespoke barn doors were also engineered, providing essential access for vehicles, drilling equipment, and heavy machinery.

Removing the drill rig cover after Winter

The defining bespoke feature of this Series 4 Truss shelter was the roof slot, designed to accommodate the extended drill mast. Our engineering team created a reinforced solution that integrated seamlessly into the overall structure. Through rigorous Finite Element Stress analyses and multiple rounds of validation and verification, we ensured the slot maintained structural integrity under extreme conditions. This careful engineering allowed safe mast operation without compromising the strength or durability of the shelter itself.

    Raised drill mast

During extended winter shutdowns when the drill mast is not in use, the exposed roof slot required weather protection. To address this, we developed a simple but effective cover system designed to pull tightly over the opening. When operational, the cover could be easily removed, allowing both mast access and natural solar heat to escape the shelter. This straightforward design ensured both protection and efficiency, helping extend the usability and lifespan of the installation.

Sleeping quarters near main drill shelter

Alongside the drill shelter, we supplied several 20-foot-wide Series 4 insulated shelters to serve as staff living quarters. Despite the extreme Antarctic environment, these structures proved simple, robust, and reliable. With basic heating such as a stove and some modest furnishings, the shelters offered researchers a surprisingly comfortable and homely environment. This balance of rugged engineering with human comfort allowed the team to work and live directly at their remote drilling site for extended missions.
