MECC and TRECC Support Robotic and Autonomous System for British Army

The British Army’s RAS trials demanded fast, resilient, plug-and-play command nodes to supervise autonomous ground and air vehicles while supporting rapid experimentation and decision-making. Weatherhaven’s MECC and TRECC filled this role, giving teams deployable, scalable spaces for C2, data fusion and mission planning at the tactical edge—exactly where the British Army emphasises experimentation, a resilient digital backbone, and accelerated decision-action cycles for Human-Machine Teams. Integrating such nodes aligns with the RAS approach to gain tempo, mass, and reduced cognitive load.

Success also came from modularity. MECC/TRECC nodes link to other containers and soft-wall shelters to build layered HQs—forward TRECC hubs supervising vehicles, feeding a larger MECC fusion cell—with standardised interfaces across power, networking, and environmental control. That architecture supported the Army’s iterative experimentation cycles and capability headmarks, accelerating lessons from trials like AWE20 into scalable force designs for 2025–2035 Human-Machine Teams (HMT) and autonomous support functions.

8 Wheeled Autonomous in MECC For Battery Charging

The MECC is a fully assembled ISO-container shelter that expands to triple its footprint in minutes, creating a stable, equipment-ready command space without exposing electronics during setup. Its central core stores mission systems, power distribution and interfaces, so staff can roll off and start supervising autonomous platforms immediately. Similarly to Exercise Wessex Storm, where a MECC supported forward HQ Agile requirements—demonstrating how rapidly a secure command post can be established for robotic control and battle management under field conditions.

TRECC shelters lined up in a row

For the most forward, mobile autonomy hubs, units used TRECC: an extended-height, width-expanding container designed for efficient transport and rapid setup across helicopter, vehicle, and sealift modes. The trailer-mounted TRECC-T deploys in under five minutes with two personnel, letting operators establish a robotic control point between halts without tools—ideal for dispersed RAS tactics. Its selection as deployable infrastructure for AWE20’s Agile C3 focus shows suitability for modern autonomous C2 concepts.

    army-approach-to-ras

Both shelters embodied the Army’s “sensors-deciders-effectors” vision: protected power, networking, and human-machine interfaces in a compact node that could plug into the tactical network. That enabled faster, better decisions and action at the edge—central to gaining tempo in RAS operations—while keeping human control meaningful. By providing robust, repeatable workspaces for autonomy software, comms, and mission systems, MECC/TRECC bridged experimentation and operations, supporting the Army’s discover-develop-deliver model during trials.

RAS HVAC and Power Generation in a MECC

Weatherhaven’s command-and-control configuration keeps equipment inside the shelter’s core during transport, setup, and teardown, protecting sensitive autonomy processors, radios, and displays from weather and dust while slashing setup risk. MECC/TRECC can be pre-wired with electrical distribution, HVAC and mechanical systems, giving stable thermal and power conditions that autonomy stacks require for reliable perception, control, and datalinks. This turnkey, mission-ready integration meant crews could focus on managing UGV/UAS tasking and safety cases, not fighting the infrastructure.

    TRECC deployed with sunset background

As ISO/CSC-certified containers, MECCs move by air, land, and sea, can be underslung by helicopter, stacked, and deployed by small teams in roughly fifteen minutes—ideal for leapfrogging C2 to keep pace with autonomous formations. TRECC-T pushes mobility further: two people, sub-five-minute deployment, expanding workspace from a low-profile trailer for convoy or light-forces usage. Together they enabled dispersed, survivable, small-signature command posts that matched RAS concepts of distributed control and rapid re-tasking.

  • Rapidly Deployable NATO Headquarters Using MECC, EHMECC, and TRECC

Rapidly Deployable NATO Headquarters Using MECC, EHMECC, and TRECC

We manufactured and delivered a fully deployable, system-integrated headquarters for a NATO Command. The facility was required to be capable of overseas deployment at only 24 hours’ notice, and to be operational in under one hour after arrival. Designed as a fully self-contained and autonomous system, the headquarters ensured independence from local infrastructure or services. This combination of speed, resilience, and autonomy allowed NATO to maintain command operations under highly challenging and uncertain environments worldwide.

A combination of EHMECC, MECC, and TRECC systems were used to create the headquarters. The EHMECC units formed the main Command Post, each accommodating up to 16 personnel in comfort. MECC units provided environmentally controlled, modular data centres for servers and IT systems, while TRECC offered forward-deployable, CH-47-transportable command capability. Though sensitive details remain restricted, these systems together ensured NATO could scale, transport, and operate efficiently in multiple operational theatres, with reliable and flexible infrastructure solutions.

EHMECC Command Post with MECC Data Centre

Fully self-contained Extended Height MECCs were delivered to provide a scalable, reliable infrastructure. These modular systems allowed operators to expand or network shelters as required by mission size. A dedicated MECC server room hosted main servers and IT equipment, ensuring high-capacity, secure, and environmentally managed computing capabilities. This modular data centre approach offered NATO the resilience to handle sensitive communications and critical systems in environments where local facilities might not be available, sufficient, or trustworthy.

EHMECC Pre Delivery Inspection Command Post

The EHMECC system delivered a Command Post environment that significantly exceeded traditional ISO containers in both comfort and usability. Designed for long operational shifts, the shelters prevented claustrophobia and instead offered an airy, office-like environment with excellent visibility of displays. Sixteen integrated workstations were fully networked via floor boxes carrying fibre and ethernet connections. This combination allowed operators to remain efficient, connected, and comfortable during extended 12-hour shifts, enhancing decision-making and sustaining operational effectiveness in the field.

    EHMECC with entry vestibule

Given uncertainty around local power supplies and environmental conditions, each shelter was delivered with its own autonomous power generation system. Generators could be positioned remotely from the Command Post using supplied umbilical cabling, minimising noise and heat. The onboard HVAC utilised a split system with ceiling-mounted units to save space and ensure quiet, effective airflow. This provided a consistently cool and controlled climate for operators, without reliance on external infrastructure or the need for complex ducting.

    3 EHMECC with entry vestibules

Every EHMECC shelter was delivered with an optional entry vestibule designed for both practicality and environmental control. The vestibule connected seamlessly to any shelter entry point and provided multipurpose functions. These included acting as a cloakroom, a space for refreshments, a secure area for temporary weapon storage, and a weather barrier against harsh external conditions. This additional modular entryway ensured the Command Post maintained a clean, organised, and professional operational environment under varied deployment scenarios.

    TRECC H Ops Room

The TRECC system provided a compact, forward-deployed Command Post designed for rapid mobility. With full CH-47 helicopter compatibility, the TRECC could be deployed quickly into locations inaccessible to standard ISO containers. Accommodating 8 to 10 personnel, the TRECC delivered an effective and fully integrated operational environment in remote or contested areas. Its deployability and smaller footprint gave NATO commanders enhanced flexibility to establish presence where larger infrastructure could not reach, ensuring forward command capability at critical times.

Our containerised shelters deliver one of the highest stowed-to-deployed volume ratios available. This unique capability not only maximises usable workspace when deployed but also reduces volume and lowers the centre of gravity when stowed. The compact configuration ensures transportability while maintaining the vehicle’s mobility envelope. By optimising both deployment size and stowed efficiency, operators gain a versatile solution that improves mobility during transport, while still providing a spacious and functional environment once fully deployed.

    Inside the TRECC

We work with providers of the latest RF attenuating materials to create compliant secure enclosures for battlefield operations. Understanding the importance of secure communications, we integrate advanced materials and construction techniques into our shelters to support RF shielding and attenuation requirements. This ensures sensitive mission systems remain protected in hostile environments. Our MECC configurations also allow integration between work areas—such as printing facilities and workshops—connected through climate-controlled interconnectors for maximum security and operational efficiency.

    Deployable 3D Printing

Additive manufacturing, where you need it.

Additive manufacturing and 3D printing are increasingly critical in both military and commercial applications. Traditional systems are designed for fixed labs and controlled environments, not for field deployment. Our expanding container systems provide clean air, environmentally regulated spaces that can be deployed worldwide. These shelters make it possible to bring advanced manufacturing capabilities directly to remote or operational locations, giving organizations immediate access to production resources wherever they are needed most.

Our expandable shelters arrive fully equipped with electrical, lighting, HVAC, and furniture integration. Purpose-built containerised systems such as EHMECC, MECC, and TRECC are manufactured in our facilities, ensuring precise quality and flexibility. This allows us to collaborate with your engineers to design and deliver deployable additive manufacturing facilities tailored to your exact requirements. Whether you need specialised integration or unique layouts, we provide solutions that match your mission, production, and operational objectives efficiently.

    2 MECC Shelters complexed

Each shelter is designed with common interfaces, allowing seamless connection to other units. Your additive manufacturing system can be linked to workshops, offices, storage, or even soft shelters, enabling integrated facility layouts. This modular approach supports scalability, so your operation can expand as requirements evolve.
